Farming linked with global carbon credit market in Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched an agroforestry project to link farming with the global carbon credit market and generate additional rural income. The agroforestry carbon finance project is estimated to generate 4.5 million carbon credits. The Yogi Adityanath government has joined hands with TERI to launch 6 agroforestry-based carbon finance projects in 29 districts of Meerut, Moradabad, Saharanpur, and Lucknow divisions.

The Natural Products Group at the Sustainable Agriculture Programme of TERI is working on red pigment production by naturally occurring coloured microbes for application in the textile industry. Creation of colours through fermentation of non-pathogenic fungi on agricultural waste-based media can be used to produce pigments with bioactivities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer and others in a sustainable way.

Govt to set up nursery in Goa to supply chonak seeds

The Goa government is set to establish a sea bass nursery for reliable seed supply to increase production of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer), commonly called 'chonak' in the state at the cost of over Rs 1 crore. TERI said that chonak is commercially cultivated in both brackish water and freshwater ponds, as well as in cages in coastal waters. In consultation with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), directorate of agriculture (South Goa), TERI has selected Durga Farm, Chinchinim.

The govt, in advocating the use of GM mustard, has cited economic and food security arguments. Critics maintain the crop can cause lasting harm to environmental and human health. According to Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, there is a constant shifting of goalposts. A certain requirement is asked to be met, and when that is done, new demands are put forward. This is an endless cycle. The fact is that GM mustard, and GM technology in general, had been put through the most robust scientific scrutiny possible.
