Energy

  • Energy performance benchmarking

We assist industries in reducing their energy consumption through audits at the plant level. We undertake technology assessments of energy and environmental performance for different industrial sectors and develop or promote energy efficient and environment friendly technological solutions.

  • Energy efficient and environment-friendly solutions

We develop and promote energy efficient technologies and environment friendly solutions for industries. The main objective is to enable supply chains to reduce fuel consumption, efficient resource utilization and enhance environmental performance.

  • CSR engagements to provide clean energy solutions

We customize and disseminate clean technologies to facilitate the energy starved population in benefitting from clean and affordable solar lighting solutions. This is done by replacing kerosene/paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices, thereby facilitating the provision of better illumination, and a kerosene smoke-free indoor environment for women.

We help prepare impact evaluation reports of the CSR initiatives for communities.

Resources & Sustainable Development

  • Policy research on the role of resources in national and global sustainable development

We study the economics of natural resource use, and its interface with development, use modelling frameworks and decision support systems for sustainable management of natural resources. We analyse markets (design, regulation, and behaviour of the agents) to suggest policy, structural, institutional, and legislative changes for promoting efficient and competitive markets.

  • Multidisciplinary research and policy advice

We perform inter-disciplinary policy research using latest science and technology developments for policy makers, regulators, and concerned stakeholders in areas of regulatory reforms in physical infrastructure sectors like energy, transport, water, and others through research, support, capacity building, awareness programmes, and handholding. Our policy advice is aimed at local and global environmental challenges to trade, investment, resource development.

Sustainable Agriculture

  • Technology for reclaming wastelands

We provide expertise in greening and reclamation of wasteland to turn it into green, productive land. We do this using a beneficial group of micro-organisms known as mycorrhizal fungi. Successful examples of sites reclaimed using this technology include fly ash overburdens, alkali chlor-laden sites, distillery effluent discharge sites, phosphogypsum ponds, coal mines, red mud, saline and arid sites.

  • Next generation technology to produce high-quality mycorrhiza

Mycorrhiza is a biofertiliser that helps promote plant growth in an environment-friendly manner and provides several benefits during the plant cultivation stages. Our in-vitro mass production technology uses a sterile, contamination-free environment, to commerciallly produce this high-quality mycorrhiza, which is viable, healthy, and genetically pure. Our next generation technology for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi is suitable for industries and requires less space for maximum recovery of propagules (up to 1000 billion propagules/annum). As part of our service, we provide end-to-end hand holding, upto the commercialisation stage.

Climate Change

  • Climate change risk assessment

We generate climate projections at global and regional scales and impacts, vulnerability and adaptation assessments in key sectors using established models and our in-house super-computing facility. We also conducts GHG inventorization and mitigation analysis. We provide national and international policy analysis and review, and contribute to key issues in negotiations encompassing adaptation, mitigation, technology, and finance.

We undertake work on various institutional issues relating to participatory forest management, and have major interests in the study of forest-based livelihoods and benefit-sharing at the community level.

  • Enhanced oil recovery from mature oil reserves

We have developed technologies of 'MEOR' (microbial enhanced oil recovery) for mature oil reserves, and PDB (paraffin degrading bacteria) for prevention of paraffin deposition in oil pipelines, which help in increasing the yield of oil wells.

  • Multidisciplinary research on natural resource conservation

We conduct water audits and quality testing that typically include: Estimation of building water use; recommendations of water saving fixtures; estimation of landscape water demand based on input on the soft areas, plant species factors, and the climatic factors; estimation of rainwater harvesting potential and recommendations on the reuse and recycling of treated waste water and rainwater, and appropriate waste-water management schemes and systems.

  • Water, soil and sludge testing

Accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) we provide services to test water (ground, surface, and drinking water), soil, and sludge.

Sustainable Habitat

  • Environmental design consultancy and advisory services

We have been actively involved in providing technical consultancy for the design and development of sustainable building complexes. The scope of work has been to review designs provided by architects so as to incorporate energy efficiency measures in the building envelope and systems design. We provide complete green design consultancy, including site planning inputs, full building performance analysis, evaluation of energy systems, renewable energy integration, water and waste management strategies, and achieving indoor air quality standards. A wide range of computations and simulation tools including DOE2, TRNSYS, ECOTECT, RADIANCE, FLOVENT, AGI32, LUMEN DESIGNER, BLAST, Phoenics, RETScreen are used to assess the environmental and cost impact of the design decisions.

  • Training & Capacity Building

We conduct capacity building for architects, building developers and service engineers on issues such as Green & Resource Efficient Developments, Construction Site Planning and Management- A GRIHA Approach, Resource Efficiency (Energy & water) in Building Sector, Smart Cities/Urban Infrastructure, Green Construction, Developments in Construction Technology, Disaster Management & Mitigation, Energy Conservation in Buildings, Future trends in Construction Technology, Construction & Demolition Waste Management, Development of Zero Discharge Campus, Solid Waste Management - Building Perspectives, Green Building Rating Systems in Indian Context, Low Cooling Technologies in Buildings, Net Zero Energy Buildings, ECBC compliance using whole building performance method (Energy Simulation on Equest software), Energy efficiency in electrical, lighting and building automation systems with hands on training on “DIAlux" software, Training on HVAC and Refrigeration in building Sector, Green Cooling Technologies, Operation and Maintenance Guidelines for buildings, Green Supply Chain etc. Over 10,000 architects, developers and engineers in the area of green buildings, energy efficiency and sustainability aspects of built environment have undergone training programmes, refresher courses, seminars and workshops.
