Reducing air pollution from transport

11 Feb 2021

Air pollution in the NCR is usually many times higher than the permissible limits. The adverse health effects of this are severe. Transport contributes to about 25% of the air pollution. The bulk of the air pollution is caused by commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, cabs, three wheelers and two wheelers. These run far more than private automobiles. During the severe lockdown last year when there were no vehicles on the road, there was a continuous welcome stretch of clean air and blue skies. Fortunately, the conditions for bringing air pollution down to acceptable levels in less than five years now exist. With some more measures, potential benefits can be achieved fully in a few years, making a huge difference to air pollution.
