As India advances toward its Net-Zero 2070 commitment and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the electrification of transport has emerged as a critical pillar of sustainable development. The Indian automotive industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation driven by Industry 4.0 (4IR). This transition from Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) to Electric Vehicles (EVs) necessitates the digitization of end-to-end processes, fundamentally impacting the entire value chain—from component manufacturing to the finished vehicle.

While the assembly of electric vehicles is highly conducive to automation due to the presence of fewer mechanical moving parts, the availability of a skilled workforce remains a significant bottleneck.

The shift to new technology has created urgent skill demands, requiring comprehensive upskilling and reskilling initiatives for the existing workforce to ensure a smooth transition.

This study examines existing skilling initiatives in India and explores how they can be leveraged for EV-specific training at a national scale. It further identifies the specific gaps and challenges faced by stakeholders across the automotive ecosystem. By collating insights from multi-stakeholder consultations across the EV value chain, this brief offers strategic recommendations. 'Skilling of an EV-Ready India: A Roadmap for 2047' outlines a phased, stakeholder-driven strategy to develop a future-ready, inclusive, and globally competitive EV workforce.
