TERI's engagement and contribution with G20 and T20.

India’s year-long Presidency culminated with the G20 Heads of State and Government Summit that took place on September 9-10, 2023, in New Delhi. In the course of the Presidency, India hosted over 200 G20 meetings across the country to deliberate on themes earmarked under the three workstreams – the Sherpa Track, the Finance Track, and the Engagement Groups.

EU-India Roadmap for Cooperation On Biofuels from Biomass for Aviation and Maritime Transport

The roadmap for EU-India cooperation on biofuels from biomass focuses mainly on the work that needs to be done to eliminate barriers that are currently blocking progress on G2 biofuel production, to create an environment in which the private sector investors and technology providers can more fully play their role in the decarbonisation of the global aviation and maritime sectors, enabled by the social transformation of rural and urban communities.

Programme LEAD (Leadership for Environment, Awareness and Development)

The Environment Education and Awareness (EEA) Area at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has designed a summer programme that enables school students to gain knowledge, enhance their skillsets and obtain access to resources and networks to strengthen their competencies on issues related to environment and sustainable development. Technical sessions by subject experts, hands-on training, internship opportunity and mentoring on sustainability-linked topics are some of the key activities curated within this holistic programme. The proposed programme will cover various domains of sustainable development with regard to research, science, technology, community engagement and outreach. The intended outcomes of the programme are to nurture a cadre of environmentally conscious and responsible students who will spearhead changes at various levels (individual, peer, family, and community). The program will also accentuate their skill sets for employability and civic life and strengthen their portfolios.

Transformative Climate Action using Participatory data driven decision making platforms (T-CAP)

India is undergoing rapid urbanization, with its urban population expected to surpass its rural population by 2031. This process has been accompanied by a gamut of social, economic, and environmental changes, including increased greenhouse gas emissions and the potential for greater vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. One of the main challenges Indian cities are facing as they grapple with adversities is the need to adapt to extreme weather events. These events can have significant impacts on public health, economic productivity, and infrastructure. This coupled with the predominantly unplanned urbanization can further increase the exposure and vulnerability of human settlements (Shekhar et al., 2022) and people to climate risks while exacerbating systemic and spatial inequalities (Garschagen et al., 2016). The traditional piecemeal and top-down urban planning and management approach is lagging behind the ever-urbanizing landscape and has provided limited avenues for participatory policymaking and implementation.

Air Pollution Source Apportionment and Carrying Capacity of Kolkata and Howrah City

Kolkata is the third most densely populated city in South Asia and the third largest economy in India, after Mumbai and Delhi. Nevertheless, the city is facing nowadays is the unequal distribution of this economic growth, as the urbanisation of rural areas, access to facilities, and income increases are concentrated in certain areas more than in others. Kolkata and Howrah municipal corporations have developed as twin cities with the increased economic activities in Kolkata. As a result of the increased urbanization of rural areas, the ambient air pollution level in and around Kolkata has increased in recent times.

Green Budgeting for Puducherry

Green budgeting is a policy innovation that serves as a planning and assessment tool that can contribute to institutionalizing and integrating environmental sustainability in various government initiatives and promote a system-wide approach. Through ex-ante planning and ex-post reflection, departments need to reorient their goals, schemes, and policies to become more environmentally and climate-sensitive. By doing so, departments could also assess how much a particular department contributes to climate change.

Scope 3 Inventorization for Corporates

Organizations striving for sustainability and net-zero goals should conduct a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. This inventory includes Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions, which the organization controls and purchases energy, respectively. Additionally, Scope 3 emissions covers indirect emissions throughout the value chain, usually accounting for more than 50% of a company’s emissions. A comprehensive GHG inventory helps identify emission sources and enables organizations to prioritize reduction strategies. Implementing such strategies enhances operational efficiency, reduces costs, and strengthens brand reputation. Overall, GHG inventorization is crucial for organizations aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to global climate change mitigation efforts.
