India has less than 2 per cent green buildings but there is a huge opportunity to increase that number as about 60 per cent of the infrastructure of the country is yet to be put in place in the next 20 years, according to Mr Sanjay Seth, Chief Executive Officer of the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council. Pollution, in Delhi and its surrounding areas, is the most severe during winter months. Starting end-October, beginning-November smog covers the entire region. A study, conducted by TERI, throws some light on the reasons behind pollution in Delhi. According to TERI's Dr Sumit Sharma, who works on environment and pollution issues, 36 per cent of the pollution has its source in Delhi itself, 34 per cent in National Capital Region while 30 per cent comes from across international borders.

The Department of Biotechnology has signed a three-year, Rs 11 crore deal with TERI to set up a centre to produce "advanced biofuels and bio-commodities." The bio-centre would be focussed on not only developing technology but also commercialising it. Other than fuel, by-products envisaged at the TERI-DBT Centre include food, feed, nutrition supplements, bio-plastics and novelty speciality chemicals.
