Udaipur is amongst the Indian cities which are facing the challenge of proper disposal of organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sludge generated from its sewage treatment plants. Udaipur generates about 180 TPD of Municipal Solid Waste and, about 70-75 MLD of sewage. City is treating this sewage through four commissioned STPs of the capacities of 25 MLD, 20 MLD, 15 MLD and 10 MLD installed in different parts of city. These STPs generate substantial amount of sludge which is posing a big disposal challenge.

In order to overcome these challenges, ICICI Securities limited along with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi, mutually agreed to develop a robust solution for safe disposal of organic waste and sludge generated from sewage treatment plant. The study has successfully demonstrated the technological solution based on Co-Digestion of organic waste and STP sludge in one of the existing biogas plant with recovery of value added products such as Energy and organic fertilizer. The project has numerous benefits such as- solution of STP sludge disposal, reduced load on Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), reduced environmental burden and, improved health of the people.
