National Bird Day highlights the vital role birds play in ecosystems — from seed dispersal and pest control to serving as indicators of environmental health — while drawing attention to threats such as habitat loss, climate change, and illegal trade.
India’s national bird, the Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), designated in 1963, is listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN but faces local pressures from habitat loss and human–wildlife conflict. Protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, it supports ecosystem balance through insect control and seed dispersal.
