Sustainable Alternatives: Phrynium pubinerve as a Bio-Packaging Solution in Meghalaya

To address the escalating environmental concerns surrounding plastic waste, TERI-NERC has promoted Phrynium pubinerve (commonly known as the packing leaf plant) as a sustainable, biodegradable alternative to plastic packaging in Meghalaya.

Integrated Plantation & Biodiversity

Supported by the National Mission on H

imalayan Studies (MoEF&CC), the project focused on both ecological restoration and resource availability:

  • Expansion: Developed 72 hectares of plantation and established four nurseries to ensure the production of high-quality planting material.
  • Agroforestry Model: The initiative integrated packing leaf cultivation with existing farming systems through strategic intercropping with arecanut, banana, cinnamon, orange, bamboo, and broom grass.

Social & Economic Impact

The project centers on community empowerment and livelihood diversification for indigenous populations:

  • Beneficiaries: A total of 132 Scheduled Tribe (ST) households across the Ri-Bhoi and West Garo Hills districts.
  • Capacity Building: Knowledge transfer was strengthened through 18 awareness programs and 5 technical training sessions, ensuring long-term project autonomy.

Value Addition & Circular Economy

Beyond the production of raw leaves, the initiative explores the full potential of the plant to maximize farmer income:

Waste Valorization: The project promotes the use of leaf petioles for creating biodegradable products. Revenue Streams: Farmers generate diverse income through the sale of leaves, seedlings, and finished artisan products.

This initiative demonstrates a scalable, nature-based solution that facilitates livelihood enhancement while advancing circular economy principles and significantly reducing plastic dependency in the Himalayan region.
