The overall objective of the study is to determine the current status of MSWM in South Asian countries (with emphasis on China), which includes the end-of-life value chain of primary waste collection, transport, secondary storage, treatment and disposal, mapping of associated waste generators (such as households, commercial/markets and institutional establishments) and their respective waste value chains, determine gaps in the current waste management status, and provide wholistic solutions to bridge the gaps in the current MSWMS through incorporation of digital solutions, best practices, and case studies from other countries for Indian context, and awareness generation solutions leading to monitorable behavior change (increase in source segregation) and incorporation of waste management curriculum in schools.
The study will be a desk-based research using secondary literature but will collect primary information and expert  inputs from key stakeholders to fill gaps to support the literature review. The final output of the study will be a report which will also include comprehensive SMART digital solutions to strengthen and enhance their existing MSWM initiatives and also develop new reliable and efficient waste collection systems for Indian cities.
