A three-way strategy to harness sustainability in ethanol’s DNA

Dr Eduardo Leão de Sousa

This article discusses mainly three points: the identification and implementation of government policies to signalise to the private sector where the expansion of sugarcane cultivation can occur; how the Brazilian private and public sectors established social and environmental protocols with targets that go even beyond the legislation; and how certification is a strong tool to promote social and environmental sustainability. The authors suggest that since Brazil and India are among the countries with the largest number of companies certified by the Bonsucro production standard they can lead the transition to a society based on renewable energy and sustainable production.
