India’s maritime sector plays a critical role in economic growth, handling a significant share of the country’s trade. At the same time, ports are increasingly expected to align with national and global climate commitments, including India’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and reducing emissions intensity by 45 per cent by 2030.
In this context, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has introduced the Green Port Performance Index (GPPI) as a structured framework to assess, benchmark, and track the environmental performance of ports. The GPPI builds on the principles of sustainable development and ecosystem restoration and provides a standardized, data-driven approach to measure emissions, resource efficiency, and environmental health across ports.
The rollout of GPPI marks a significant shift from qualitative sustainability initiatives to quantifiable performance-based assessment. However, effective implementation requires a clear understanding of the framework, indicators, and methodology, alignment among ports, stakeholders, and regulators, and strengthened capacity for data collection, monitoring, and reporting. In this regard, the webinar aims to create awareness, build technical understanding, and facilitate stakeholder dialogue on GPPI implementation.
The key objectives of the webinar are to provide an overview of the GPPI framework and its strategic relevance, explain the methodology, indicators, and scoring approach and highlight how GPPI supports emissions monitoring and the green transition of ports, discuss implementation challenges and capacity requirements, and promote stakeholder engagement towards a standardized sustainability assessment system.
The discussion will broadly cover the GPPI framework dimensions of Climate Change, Ecosystem Vitality, and Environmental Health; emissions tracking across Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3; resource efficiency including energy, water, and dredging management; as well as environmental monitoring covering air, water, noise, and waste. It will also highlight the role of GPPI in enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian ports.
