Virtual training on 'Identifying and mitigating financial and technical risks of biogas projects'

On behalf of the Global Methane Initiative (GMI), a virtual training was organised on identifying and mitigating financial and technical risks of biogas projects. The training was hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) jointly with Abt Associates. It was conducted virtually over WebEx on July 11 2023 at 3 p.m. IST.

The goal of this training was to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the importance of risk analysis in biogas projects, including a demonstration of how to use the Risk Analysis Checklist for Biogas Projects to identify and mitigate risks associated with biogas projects. The Risk Analysis Checklist for Biogas Projects provides “best practices” for designing, implementing, and evaluating anaerobic digestion (AD)/biogas projects.

In addition, the training also demonstrated how to use the Anaerobic Digestion Screening Tool, to estimate biogas and energy production potential from different feedstocks.

The training was delivered by TERI and Abt Associates who have extensive knowledge in biogas projects and risk analysis and it covered topics such as how to assess risks around biogas project feedstocks, outputs, operations, and financial feasibility. This training was beneficial for biogas project stakeholders in India, including loan providers and project developers, who are involved in the funding and implementation of biogas projects.
