Transforming Industrial Landscapes: TERI and Hindustan Zinc Partner for Historic Ecological Restoration

TERI has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Zinc Limited to spearhead a massive 250-hectare ecological restoration project in Rajasthan. Set to become the world’s largest green cover area within an industrial premises, this initiative will deploy TERI’s specialized environmental expertise at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex in Chittorgarh, transforming a heavy industrial landscape into a thriving natural ecosystem. Rather than simple tree planting, the project focuses on deep ecological revival through a scientifically engineered framework:

  • Native Biodiversity: Introduction of carefully selected native trees, shrubs, herbs, and grasses perfectly adapted to the local Rajasthan terrain.
  • Invasive Species Management: Active eradication and control protocols to protect native flora.
  • Aquatic Ecosystem Support: Targeted measures to rejuvenate and sustain local water bodies.
  • Long-Term Sustainability: Development of robust, future-proof maintenance and protection protocols.

From blueprint to execution, TERI will bring together leading subject matter experts to drive the planning, design, plant species selection, and implementation phases of this historic project.
