Research for energy conservation in India: Phase 1

The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan or IEEJ and TERI have entered into an agreement to cooperate on the energy efficiency improvements in India by undertaking joint research projects. Some of the areas identified under the study include the industry sector and the thermal power plants. The activities would include analysing challenges facing India and Japan in the energy sector, undertaking measures to address the energy challenges, sharing experiences, and identifying areas of future cooperation. Energy conservation has been identified as one of the factors to address the energy challenges facing the two nations. The following specific issues are proposed to be addressed in the joint study.
o
o Primary energy consumption by sectors thermal power generation, industry, transport, residential/commercial, and agriculture in India.
o Energy consumption in five major energy-intensive industry sub-sectors in India aluminium, cement, fertilizer, pulp and paper, and iron and steel.
o Energy conservation opportunities in thermal power plants and each industry sub-sector.
o Major barriers to energy conservation policies.
