A major portion of energy is consumed in the SMiE sector to meet the low-grade thermal energy requirements such as water heating, steam generation and hot air generation. Reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and efficient utilization of locally available biomass are priorities of the Government of India. Recently TERI has initiated a pilot financing of biomass thermal gasifier systems through the TERI Licensee manufacturers.

The project aims to up-scale the current financing mechanism through creation of a revolving fund to the existing gasifier manufacturers in India for large-scale penetration of biomass thermal gasifier systems.

The following broad activities are envisaged to be undertaken to achieve their objective:
- Networking among the stakeholders through organization of four business meets.
- Up-scaling the financing of biomass gasifier systems to the whole country
- Establish LSPs and capacity building of the stakeholders for hassle free O&M of the installed systems
