Red mud catalyst for hydrocarbon cracking and carbon adsorbent production

01 Jan 2008 28 Feb 2012
The major objectives of the project are:
1.Develop suitable catalyst from red mud, an aluminium industry waste
2.Test the catalyst for hydrocarbon cracking / activation
3.Use the carbon deposited on catalyst as an adsorbent for removal of pollutants that are commonly present in water and wastewater (heavy metal, phenol, dyes etc.).

This will lead to production of value added products from an abundantly available waste, red mud. The products of the catalytic reaction ? carbon deposits, hydrogen, benzene in case of dehydroaromatisation of methane have several applications in the energy, chemicals production and environmental areas. The carbon can be used as an adsorbent in water and wastewater treatment. Hydrogen is a clean fuel and can be used with a fuel cell for automotive as well as stationary power generation applications. Production of aromatics, or other higher hydrocarbons, from methane using catalysts is a potentially useful synthetic pathway.
