India - Japan Workshop on Energy Transition 2023

On-behalf of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), organized the India - Japan Workshop on Energy Transition 2023 in the online mode on March 10, 2023.

India and Japan announced the " India-Japan Clean Energy Partnership (CEP)" on March 19, 2022. The Partnership aims to promote energy cooperation between India and Japan through diverse and realistic energy transitions utilizing all energy sources and technologies to ensure energy security, carbon neutrality and economic growth. The bilateral energy cooperation areas that have been addressed under the India-Japan Energy Policy Dialogue would be expanded to include the following 11 areas, including clean energy.

  • Electric Vehicles (EV), storage systems including batteries, electric vehicle charging infrastructure (EVCI)
  • Energy Conservation in Buildings and Industries, Energy Efficient Appliances
  • Development of Solar Energy including Solar PV cells
  • Wind Energy
  • Clean, including Green Hydrogen
  • Clean, including Green Ammonia
  • Greater and cleaner use of LNG
  • Carbon Capture, Utilization & Storage (CCUS)/Carbon Recycling
  • Emerging fuels including Biofuels, CBG
  • Strategic Petroleum Reserves
  • Clean coal technology

CEP also mentions that public-private workshops will be held to discuss the initiatives of both countries, including R&D and human resource development and thus, this workshop was held based on its framework.

The main objectives of this workshop were to exchange information on how to realize the energy transition including clean energy and also to explore mutual cooperation in this field.
