Environmental Sustainability Summit—Harnessing Bamboos’ Potential for a Sustainable Tomorrow

A one-day symposium titled “Environmental Sustainability Summit—Harnessing Bamboos’ Potential for a Sustainable Tomorrow” was hosted in Mumbai on January 9, 2024.

This international gathering brought together luminaries from diverse fields to discuss and define the pivotal role of bamboo in combating global warming and securing a brighter, greener future for all.

Several high-level dignitaries graced the event, namely Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Eknath Shinde; HE Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Ramesh Bais; Principal Secretary, Environment and Climate Change Department, Government of Maharashtra, Mr Praveen Darade; Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Government of India, Mr Manoj Ahuja; Former CEO, National Rainfed Area Authority Dr Ashok Dalwai; Former Faculty, Indian Institute of Science, Mr K P J Reddy; Chairperson of Godrej Industries, Mr Nadir Godrej; Director General, MGNAREGA Mission, Government of Maharashtra, Mr Nand Kumar; Chairman and Managing Director, Assam Bio-refinery, Mr Bhaskar Phukan. Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, delivered an address during the inaugural session of the Summit.

The Summit is geared towards generating a comprehensive report that outlines strategies for:

  • Challenge: The scientific explanation of the crisis owing to climate change
  • Solution: The opportunities poised by bamboo-based solutions to combat climate change
  • Implementation: Establishing a robust ecosystem enabling decisive actions
  • Sustenance: Charting a roadmap for short-term and long-term actions
