TERI with its vision to work for global sustainable development and its commitment towards creating innovative solutions for a better tomorrow has evolved a model for providing access to clean lighting through centralised solar charging model under its "Lighting a Billion Lives" (LaBL) campaign initiative. The campaign aims to bring light into the lives of one billion rural people by displacing the kerosene and paraffin lanterns with solar lighting devices, thereby facilitating education of children; providing better illumination and kerosene smoke free indoor environment for women to do household chores; and providing opportunities for livelihoods both at the individual level and at village level.

Lighting a Billion Lives, casting a new light into the lives of rural denizens

Not long ago, darkness used to fall early in Sunderpura, a small village enveloped by the Aravali ranges in Rajasthan, as the sun went down. Today, sun shines here even at night. The ray of light for Sunderpura came through the 'Lighting a Billion Lives' campaign, which provided a solution in the form of a humble solar lantern which harnesses solar energy. Read more →
