National Digital Library of India
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), under its National Mission on Education through Information
and Communication Technology (NMEICT), has initiated the National Digital Library of India (NDL India) pilot project
to develop a framework for a virtual repository of learning resources with a single-window search facility. Filtered
and federated searching is employed to facilitate a focused search so that the learners can find out the right resource
with the least effort and in minimum time. NDL India is designed to hold content in any language and provides
interface support for the leading Indian languages. It is being arranged to provide support for all academic levels,
including researchers and lifelong learners; all disciplines; all popular forms of access devices; and differently abled
learners. It is being developed to help students prepare for entrance and competitive examinations, to enable people
to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world, and to facilitate researchers to perform interlinked
exploration from multiple sources. The pilot project is devising a framework that is being scaled up with respect to
content volume and diversity to serve all levels and disciplines of learners. It is being developed at the Indian Institute
of Technology Kharagpur.
Digital Empowerment of Citizens
Digital India, a flagship programme of the Government of India, aims to transform India into a digitally empowered
society and knowledge economy. Information and communications technology (ICT) will dwell upon three key vision
areas: ‘Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen’, ‘Governance and Services on Demand’, and ‘Digital Empowerment of
Citizens’. The event will aim at building the overall capabilities in the Indian context to support the Digital India initiatives.
This special event will broadly cover the following: This event will also include components such as ‘Capacity Building
Initiatives in e Governance’, among others. The event will explore a wide range of solutions and produce an actionable
report for India’s policymakers.
