Action and monitoring plans for reclamation of red mud pond through afforestation activities at HINDALCO, Muri

The larger goal of the project is to develop green cover in the entire red mud ponds of HINDALCO, Muri and convert the red mud deposits, which is inhospitable for plants, to a substrate which will allow them to grow and develop by improving its physical and physico-chemical conditions, and removing the inhibiting substances by means of low-cost additives and treatments. The specific objectives of the assignment are: ? Standardization of plantation techniques and identification of suitable tree, shrub and grass species for red mud pond. ? Soil amendment by screening of suitable bacterial and mycorrhizal inoculations and use of vermicompost, FYM, fertilizers and gypsum etc. ? Capacity development of HINDALCO staff and technology transfer for raising of vegetation on red mud pond ? Monitor growth and survival pattern of each individual species under various treatments ? Monitor the physicochemical condition of the treated area on regular basis.
