Thematic Workshop cum Panel discussion on
Revolutionizing the publishing
model
29 November 2013 (Friday)
Time 11.30 – 1.00 pm
Venue: Gulmohar, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
Background:
Digital technology is revolutionizing the publishing world. New technology
has created a multitude of avenues through which academics, scholars,
publishers, librarians, and other related fields can communicate. However,
the use of this technology remains limited; research processes and the
dissemination of research results have yet to fully assimilate the capabilities
of the web and other digital media. Producers and consumers remain wedded
to formats developed in the era of print publication, and the reward
systems for researchers remain tied to those delivery mechanisms.
A major challenge for publishers is to reach audiences for a work across
multiple platforms, formats and distribution models by harnessing new
technologies. New publishing models are emerging in response to demand
for real-time dissemination, dynamic material, more collaborative research
and authoring environments, and usage of rich media. Multimedia tools
(video and podcasting tools) allow academics and researchers to produce
engaging, interactive audiovisual content to promote and publish research
and scientific advances. The rapid advance in the video technology allow
for an immediate and engaging way of communicating knowledge and engendering
debate, with various digital platforms providing the ability to refer
to, comment on, and share videos. They are also well suited to presenting
research findings and phenomena that work best when presented visually.
Leading publishers like JoVE take advantage of video/multimedia technology
to capture and transmit the multiple facets and intricacies of scientific
and research progress.
The workshop-cum-panel discussion aims to broaden awareness of current
efforts in digital and multimedia publishing across disciplines and
the changes in modern research communications due to effective use of
information and communication technology.
