  • Sustainable Tomorrow: Harnessing ICT Potential

    The report, 'Sustainable Tomorrow: Harnessing ICT Potential' is an outcome of months of research and analysis by Business Council for Sustainable Development (TERI-BCSD) and National Association of Software & Services Companies (NASSCOM).

    The ICT industry is playing a transformational role in the way businesses, customers and citizens are serviced, and also leading the way in establishing a new paradigm for Knowledge and Services led economy. ICT solutions have enabled outreach of organizations, improved decision making and pace of the development of new products and services. Greening the industry through a combination of ICT Solutions and Green Practices, is enabling various industry verticals to demonstrate leadership towards achieving the goals of sustainable development.

    Business Council for Sustainable Development (TERI-BCSD) and National Association of Software & Services Companies (NASSCOM) have been working jointly to develop this White Paper with recommendations put forth by over 70 industry members and government stakeholders.

Workshop on Industrial Water Use Efficiency

Date: 19 February 2013
Venue: TERI, Bangalore

TERI- BCSD organized the third chapter of the Industrial Water Use Efficiency Workshop at TERI’s Bangalore Center on 19 February, 2013. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Gaurav Gupta, Chairman, Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Mr. Gupta in his opening remarks mentioned the necessity of measured usage of this depleting resource called – Water. He threw light on some of the major initiatives that BWSSB has been undertaking to ensure Water Use Efficiency. The day long workshop saw session from TERI Experts from the Water Resources Division sharing insights on various methods of water use efficiency. It also saw Industry speakers from SAB Miller and Wipro share their sustainability practices. At the end of the workshop there was a detailed group discussion which was chaired by Mr Dipankar Sanyal, CEO TERI-BCSD. The panelist were - Mr. S Vishwanath, Rainwater Club; Mr. K P Pravinjith, Managing Director, Paradigm Environment Strategies and Mr Anshuman, Associate Director, TERI-Water Resource Division. Participants at the workshop were from companies like, Danfoss Industries, Vedanta, Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited, Cipla and Hindustan Unilever Limited.

Master Class on GRI Reporting

Venue: Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi

SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) has mandated listed entities in India to submit Business Responsibility Reports, as a part of their Annual Reports, describing measures taken by them along the key principles enunciated in the National Voluntary Guidelines (NVGs) on Social, Environmental and Economic Responsibilities of Business’ framed by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA). With increase in such measures taken by stock exchanges and other regulatory bodies to ensure transparency in business operations, there is a need for Indian business community and Investors to understand and coordinate the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) sustainability reporting process as well as link it to the Indian NVGs for Business Responsibility Reports. Accordingly, TERI-Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in association with GRI Focal Point India rolled out a Master Class on GRI Reporting on 30 January 2013 in Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi - this three hour training provided participants with an introduction to GRI and Sustainability Reporting guidance in the form of Framework, supplements and learning tools that it currently provides.


Workshop on “Industrial Water Use Efficiency towards Sustainable Business”

Water is one of the most indispensable and vital natural resources for economic development, health, food security, transportation, energy and other sectors. In view of the unplanned consumption of water resources driven by increased population and economic growth, countries across the globe are facing the challenge to meet the unprecedented demand for water with limited availability. By recognizing the problems and proactively seeking best management solutions in the industrial sector, TERI, with its vast experience and expertise in the water sector, is going to organise 5 city workshops on sustainable management of water resources by way of integrating water use efficiency for industries. The Hyderabad event was the second chapter in the series. The first chapter was successfully organised in Mumbai. The Industrial Water Use Efficiency Workshop was organized in Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. It was well received by the participants. Some of the companies that participated were Dr Reddy’s, GMR and ITC (Paperboard & Speciality Papers Division).

Industrial Water Use Efficiency for Sustainable Business

Business council as part of its thematic focus on Water Management & Efficiency, organised first of its multi city workshops titled - Industrial Water Use Efficiency towards Sustainable business on 09 October, 2012 at Mumbai. The workshop was hosted by Lafarge India Pvt Ltd at their Construction Development Lab in Andheri (East). This focused one-day workshop, saw senior water experts from TERI, academicians and select business specialist share their insights, case studies (both product and industry based) and other findings on the subject. The sessions were broadly divided into the following themes – Water Use Efficiency(WUE)– An approach for efficient water management; Industrial Waste Water Management – Towards zero water discharge; Water Conservation – Guidelines and best management practices. Mr Lionel Bourbon, Head Construction Development Lab, Lafarge India Pvt Ltd. during his welcome address elaborated upon the need and efficient application of water conservation for sustained business. Adding further; Anshuman, Associate Director, Water Resource and Policy Management Department TERI, discussed how the ecosystem is becoming “water stressed” and how it is having serious consequences on our environment at both local and global scale. He showcased many industrial case studies taken up by TERI that elaborated scope and innovative approaches. Water Energy Nexus, Wetland Management, Ground water Modeling and Significance of UNGC’s the CEO Water Mandate in achieving Water Use Efficiency were some of the other topics that were covered during the workshop. Apart from specific industry experts present, the workshop saw participation from middle to senior management from companies like ACC, Mahindra and Mahindra, BASF, HPCL and Jain Irigation. BCSD team aims to conduct this workshop at other cities of the country namely Hyderabad, Bangaluru and New Delhi. Each of these cities while largely covering the broad topic will focus on divergent areas.

3rd Management Development Programme on "Green Buildings: The GRIHA Approach"

Venue: Infosys Limited, Bangalore

TERI-BCSD in association with ADaRSH organised the 3rd Management Development Programme on Green Buildings under Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), the National Rating System for Green Buildings from 26 to 27 July, 2012 at Infosys Campus, Bengaluru. The two day workshop was organised to promote Sustainable Habitat and Green Buildings in the corporate sector with special focus on Energy-Efficiency in buildings. It was championed by TERI-BCSD member company PTC India Ltd. Ms. Mili Majumdar, Director, Sustainable Habitat, TERI distinguished speaker at the workshop, shared an overview on Green Buildings and how it contributes for a sustainable development. Further, Mr. Apoorv Vij, Programme Officer, ADaRSH, Sustainable Habitat Division TERI, discussed the concepts of SVAGRIHA, which is a design – cum – rating system that helps in design and evaluation of small stand-alone buildings like, individual residences, motels, small offices and commercial buildings. While ensuring enhanced energy performance in buildings, there are various strategies involved like renewable energy application, Mr. Pradeep Kumar, Associate Director, Building Energy Systems CRSBS-TERI; threw light on the same. On the other hand Ms. Padmini, Infosys and Mr Subrato Dey, SABIC Research & Technology Pvt Ltd, talked about the benefits of GRIHA using the example of GRIHA compliant projects - Infosys Hyderbabad and Chennai and SABIC Research & Technology Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore. Principles of Sustainable Site Development and Solid Waste Management in buildings as per GRIHA standards; were other topics that were discussed during the workshop. Apart from the insights shared by industry experts, the workshop also included a field visit to BCIL ZED Earth Villa, Bengaluru which is a SVA -GRIHA registered site for more hands-on experience of technologies helping in achieving energy efficiency in buildings. The workshop saw participation from middle and senior level managers and engineers responsible for planning, designing and construction of green and smart buildings, from companies like – Bosch Ltd, CLP India Pvt. Ltd, Fenesta Building Systems (DCM),GMR Group, Infosys Ltd, HUDCO Ltd , Johnson Controls (I) Pvt. Ltd, Johnson Matthey , Kluber Lubrication India Pvt. 6th Training and Capacity Building Workshop on Sustainability Reporting at Hyderabad

Venue: State Bank Staff College, Hyderabad

In continuation of its endeavor to promote Sustainable Development among Indian Corporates, TERI-BCSD organized the sixth ‘Training and Capacity Building Workshop on Sustainability Reporting’ on 04-05 June 2012 at Hyderabad, with support from the ‘The Royal Norwegian Embassy’. DNV (Det Norske Veritas AS), a member company of TERI-BCSD and one of the leading certification and risk management enterprises provided capacity building during the workshop. This workshop was hosted by State Bank of India (SBI), the only Indian bank to feature in the Fortune 500 list. The programme saw participation of middle & senior managerial level business representatives from leading companies like ACC Ltd, Bayer Group, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Dassault Systems India, Efficient Carbon, Environmental Management Centre LLP, Export Trading Group, Genesis Burson-Marsteller South Asia, GMR Group, ITW India Ltd, L&T Construction, NTPC Ltd and State Bank of India.In the wake of recent SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) directive mandating Business Responsibility Reports and Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MoCA) developed 'National Voluntary Guidelines, TERI-BCSD updated the workshop content to sensitize participants with latest knowledge on the subject. During the inaugural session, Ms Annapurna Vancheswaran (Director, Sustainable Development Outreach Division, TERI) and Chief Guest, Ms Jyoti S. Lele (General Manger & Principal, State Bank Staff College, Hyderabad) welcomed all the participants at the State Bank Staff College, Hyderabad. During her inaugural address, Ms Vancheswaran while expressing gratitude to SBI for hosting the workshop also highlighted the need of Sustainability reporting for Indian Corporate Sector. Fostering, knowledge sharing within industry, senior colleague from Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited shared BPCL’s experience and journey while preparing its Sustainability Report. The two-day workshop also provided hands-on experience on sustainability reporting through case study based group exercises apart from enhancing learning on report preparation process. Participants were introduced to different standards and principles such as AA 1000 Assurance Standard, ISAE 3000, UNGC, with special focus on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (version 3.0 & 3.1). Creating a better understanding on existing reporting frameworks and future trends the workshop provided insights to participants on concepts such as Integrated Reporting, XBRL & Sustainability Reporting, Interactive Reporting and 'National Voluntary Guidelines on Social, Environmental and Economic Responsibilities of Business’. The training was conducted by Mr Santhosh Jayaram (Head, Sustainability & Business Excellence Services, South Asia, Det Norske Veritas) who brought in his international experience of working with major multinational companies in the field of sustainability reporting.

Management Development Programme on Green Buildings: The GRIHA Approach

TERI-BCSD, in association with ADaRSH, organized the Management Development Programme on Green Buildings with a special focus on GRIHA on 11-12 January 2012 at Mumbai. Held at the corporate office of Hindustan Construction Company Ltd, a member company of TERI-BCSD, this was the second in the series of awareness and capacity building programmes on promoting Sustainable habitat among Indian Corporate Sector. The initiative is championed by TERI BCSD member company PTC India Ltd. During the programme, Ms Mili Majumdar, Director, Sustainable Habitat, TERI provided the participants an overview of Green Buildings and GRIHA (the National Rating System for Green Building) and highlighted its importance for Sustainable Development. Mr Apoorv Vij, Programme Officer, ADaRSH, Sustainable Habitat Division TERI, discussed with the participants the principles of Sustainable Site Development. Ms. Usha Rangarajan (Director, Landmark Design Group), Mr. Devender Mahajan (DGM – Sustainability Services, Synefra Engineering & Construction Ltd) and Mr. Santosh Deodhar (AVP- QS, HIRCO) highlighted the benefits of GRIHA implementation in GRIHA compliant projects, namely, PCNTDA Pimpri Chinchwad, Suzlon One Earth Campus and HIRCO Residential Project, Vikhroli. Mr Hrushikesh Kolatkar, Director, Building environment (India) Pvt. Ltd presented the solid waste management strategies in green buildings. Mr. Krunal Negandhi, Asst. Vice President – Environment, Lavasa Corporation Limited shared the strategies of Integrated Watershed Management at Lavasa project with the participants. Mr Parimita Mohanty, Fellow, Center for Distributed Generation, TERI provided the overview of Smart Mini Grid and renewable energy applications in green buildings. Mr. Balbir Singh Khera, Chief Executive Officer, Surmount Energy Solutions shared his thoughts on the Sustainable Lighting, HVAC and Renewable Energy Systems in green buildings with the participants. The two-day programme was attended by middle and senior level managers responsible for planning, designing and construction of green and smart buildings at leading companies like - ACC Limited, BASF India LTD, Carrier Air conditioning & Refrigeration Ltd., Det Norske Veritas AS, Gail (India) Ltd, Essar Power Ltd, HCC Real Estate Limited, Hirco Group, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, JK White Cement, Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete India Pvt. 5th Training and Capacity Building Workshop on Sustainability Reporting

Reaffirming its commitment towards promoting the concept of sustainable development among the Indian corporate diaspora, TERI-BCSD organized the fifth in the series of Training and Capacity Building Workshops on Sustainability Reporting at Mumbai on 10-11 January 2012. The series of workshops are organized by TERI-BCSD, in association with its Norwegian member company DNV (Det Norske Veritas, AS) - one of the leading certification bodies across the world - with support from the ‘The Royal Norwegian Embassy'. The training was conducted by Mr Santhosh Jayaram (Head, Sustainability & Business Excellence Services, South Asia & South Africa Region) who brought in his international experience of working with major multinational companies in the field of sustainability reporting. The programme focused on providing hands-on experience on reporting through case study based group exercises apart from enhancing learnings on report preparation process. During the one-hour interactive Experience-sharing session on ‘Sustainability Strategies’, Ms Beroz Gazdar (Vice-President, Group Sustainability, Mahindra & Mahindra), Mr Anant G. Nadkarni (Vice-President, Group Corporate Sustainability, Tata Group) and Mr Alok C. Sharma (General Manager – Corporate Sustainability, Larsen & Toubro Limited) shared their experiences on the design and development of sustainability strategies within their organizations. The Experience-sharing: Sustainability Reporting in India on Day II of the workshop provided perspectives of lead discussants – Ms Prema Shrikrishna (Manager – Sustainability, Vodafone India Ltd) and Ms Alka Talwar (Head - Community Development, Tata Chemicals Limited) - on business case for reporting and the current status of reporting in India, deliberating on imperatives of reporting, mandatory reporting regime, target audience/stakeholder group and so on, linking the same with the experiences gained in the journey towards preparation of sustainability reports within their organizations. Thirty one senior and middle-level managers from 19 TERI-BCSD member and non-member companies participated in the workshop.
