Mr. Karan Mangotra holds an MBA in Climate Finance from the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Karan is a multi-disciplinary researcher and having expertise in the areas of climate finance and market mechanisms. He has led several projects related to energy efficiency, HFC phase out, carbon pricing, carbon markets, MRV frameworks, among others. Karan is leading an ongoing project with the World Bank Group on networked carbon markets, which includes assessing the fungibility of national market-based mechanism (PAT and REC schemes) and developing a methodology for assessing the green credit value based on the co-benefit approach. Karan also contributed to the development of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) for energy efficiency and prepared INDCs for steel, cement, fertilizer, paper & pulp and building sectors. He has also completed research projects on comparing national policies and building frameworks for MRV of NAMAs. Karan is also leading a flagship initiative- India GHG Program, which builds comprehensive measurement and management strategies to reduce emissions and drive more profitable, competitive and sustainable businesses and organisations in India. Karan started his career in 2005 with one of India’s largest conglomerate the TATA group following which he joined the United Nations Development Programme as an energy efficiency expert. In 2016, he joined The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) as a Fellow and Area Convenor leading their climate change team and currently he is an Associate Director of Earth Science and Climate Change Division. He served as a member of the team that developed the energy INDCs and was a part of the Indian delegation to COP21.
