However the unprecedented pace at which the destruction of ocean resources is occurring wherein more than 90 per cent of the big fish has been depleted and 50 per cent of the coral reefs are destroyed is depriving the oceans the space to rejuvenate. The issue gets compounded due to marine pollution, wherein it is estimated that 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in the oceans.

Puducherry, June 5, 2023: On the 50th World Environment Day, the Union Territory of Puducherry released the green budget report, making Puducherry the first Union Territory to adopt the policy innovation of green budgeting.
