Project

Planning of sustainable regeneration in mining areas using tri-sector partnerships
for DFID, UK

Project web site

Summary

This project has two components: technical and social. The technical relates to the identification of different uses that mine pits can be put to, threshold values for iron ore that can help decide the life of a mine, and the land use options for restoring degraded land. The technical objectives of this research will contribute significantly to improvements in the village's economy, ecosystem, and social equity. Participation of the local population in development plans will empower them to implement the plan for overall improvement of the ecological and environmental quality of the village. It will also lead to new patterns of distribution of power and control of common property resources. The social objectives will help local communities develop alternative opportunities for income and employment in the mining region. All objectives will be achieved via partnerships with the local community, mining companies, and the government. The Department of Mining, the Minerals Foundation, Goa Mineral Owners Exporters' Association, local villagers, panchayats, and a local development NGO, Gram Vikas Kendra, have been consulted to determine whether they are interested in being involved in such a study.
