Project

Facilitating municipal solid waste management through training and awareness programmes
Sponsor: State Pollution Control Board

Summary

One of the pressing environmental problems in Goa today, is the management of solid waste. Most of the waste management models followed in municipal areas, advocate waste reduction and segregation at source as a preliminary step. Further this being endorsed in the Municipal Waste Handling Rules 2000, the project works to motivate and solicit the participation of the various stakeholders in municipal waste management by spreading awareness and training. The specific objectives of the project are as follows:

To share and communicate information to various stakeholder groups regarding the importance of waste reduction and segregation at the source.
To motivate decision makers to adopt and implement an effective waste-management policy.
To motivate different stakeholders to participate in waste management through reduction and segregation of waste at source.

The project stakeholders are broadly classified as;
a) Waste managers to include municipal councilors, and the private and public collectors, transporters and processors of waste, and,
b) Waste generators comprising households, users of public place, and commercial establishments.

Targeted and innovative strategies have been identified to implement this project.

This project is implemented in the Municipal Council of Margao, South Goa district, Goa, India.
