Villages around Sonshi and Codli mines: a survey report
for Sponsored by Sesa Goa Pvt. Limited

 

Summary

This study arrived at the socio-economic status, and needs of the local communities in 6 mining villages surrounding Sesa Goa’s Sonshi and Codli mines. Of the 6 villages, 4 were in North Goa and 2 were in South Goa. The objective of the study was to provide Sesa Goa with background information to plan social investment programmes for the villages. The database for the 6 villages were arrived at from primary and secondary sources.

Based on the suggestions of the villagers and the main findings of the socio-economic status of these villages, the study has suggested a programme which included the following:

sq_a.gif (65 bytes)an adult literacy campaign;
sq_a.gif (65 bytes)solar cook stoves;
sq_a.gif (65 bytes)street lighting; and
sq_a.gif (65 bytes)improved health facilities;

Further the study strongly recommended the appointment of a Community Development Officer to oversee the planning, executing, and monitoring of the above programmes. It also recommended the need to develop socio-economic indicators that could measure the progress towards more sustainable development in these villages.
