Project A sustainable development
framework for the minerals sector of Gujarat, Phase I Summary TERI proposes
to work, in a phased manner, with the Gujarat Mineral Research and
Development Society (GMRDS) to develop a Sustainable Development Framework
that will be used to guide the development of the minerals sector
in the state. In Year I, Phase I, we propose to identify a set of
key principles that will guide the development of the sector. A Good
Practice Guide will be developed in order to show the way forward
to the industry, the government and the local community that are associated
with the minerals. Based on these principles, in Year 2, a Reporting
Framework and an accompanying Assurance Procedure will be created.
The reporting framework will help introduce transparency in the operations
of the minerals sector, thus increasing accountability of the sector
to the government, as well as other key stakeholders and the Assurance
procedure will set in place a process to evaluate the quality of reporting.
Further, working together with the GMRDS on the above components,
TERI proposes to build the capacity of the GMRDS staff by sensitizing
them to various socio-economic and environmental issues associated
with minerals development and training them on the usage of the framework
and the tools created through the project.
