Nanotechnology is the study of phenomena exhibited by materials at the atomic and molecular level of dimensions ranging from a few nanometers to less than hundred nanometers. The total global demand for nanoscale materials, tools and devices was estimated at nearly $7.5 billion in 2003 and is expected to reach $28.7 billion in 2008, at an average annual growth rate of 30.6%.

Molecular characterization of Pongamia pinnata germplasm

The project aims at survey and identification of superior high yielding trees of Pongamia through multidisciplinary approach. The trees will be evaluated morphologically, biochemically and with molecular markers for their potential for biodiesel production. Markers associated with oil and seed traits will be identified.

Development of Tailor made Green Packaging Plastic - thermal, mechanical and biodegradation studies

In this study, synthetic plastics-bioplastics blends would be prepared. A suitable compatibilizer would be synthesized so as to improve the dispersion of the filler in the matrix phase. Starch and chitosan based polymers with nanoclay reinforcements will be attempted. The mechanical, thermal and morphological studies will be carried out as per the ASTM standards.
