  • Review of national targets must for climate action: Pachauri

    While India and other countries have been opposing a review of their national contributions to tackle climate change, chairperson of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Dr R K Pachauri is firm that unless there is a process of review in place, the direction the world is taking to tackle climate change will not be clear. A periodic review of targets and achievements is a must, Dr Pachauri said in an interview. It is important between now and the new treaty in Paris and beyond, to focus on the need to keep reviewing what countries were doing in relation to what needs to be done and what is optimal from the scientific point of view. The 15th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit to be held in February will also provide a platform to discuss this review, Dr Pachauri said.

  • Kumaon varsity collaborates with European Commission on biomass research

    The Kumaon University has joined hands with the European Commission to carry out research in the field of biomass and bio-waste. This collaboration is under the part of the project, SAHYOG (Strengthening Networking on Biomass Research and Biowaste Conversion - Biotechnology for Europe-India Integration), jointly funded by the European Commission and the department of biotechnology under ministry of science and technology. The project is being coordinated by the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development and TERI.

  • Study recommends treating e-rickshaw as motor vehicles

    A study on e-rickshaws has recommended that the battery-operated vehicles be treated as motor vehicles. All the e-rickshaws tested on the field had motor power in excess of 250 Watts and a few e-rickshaws showed speed level above 25 kmph while others had speed in the range of 20-25 kmph. Based on the above results, TERI recommended treating these e-rickshaws as motor vehicles, the study conducted by TERI said. A bill, Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, 2014, to regularise e-rickshaws and provide for driving licences for battery-operated vehicles has already been introduced in the Lok Sabha. Earlier the Delhi Transport Department had commissioned TERI to do a study on the battery operated three wheeler vehicles.

  • TERI and UTC set up Centre of Excellence for Energy Efficient Buildings in India

    TERI and United Technologies Corporation have launched a Centre of Excellence for Energy Efficient Buildings in India. The Centre will work towards evaluation of the existing building energy rating systems, derivation of tools and techniques for energy management, real time reporting of consumption, and identification and cost benefit analysis of conservation measures, TERI and UTC said in a joint statement.
