  • Green Olympiad - TERI's clarion-call to "Go Green"

    With intent to catch the young minds, especially school students and orient them towards environment stewardship, TERI is holding its annual Green Olympiad examination on 29 September 2007. With an innate belief that children are the caretakers of the planet and investing in them today ensures a more habitable planet, TERI designed the Green Olympiad in an innovative manner so as to test the knowledge of students in the field of environment, and in turn create awareness about key issues touching our daily lives.

    Based on the results of a survey of power consumption in three areas of the Capital, the Delhi Government's Power Department claims that the proposed time-of-day (ToD) metering system to be implemented on a pilot basis would benefit consumers. TERI has proposed different peak, normal and off-peak periods to synchronize with the variation of seasonal load patterns in appliance use.

    In an attempt to win the trust of consumers, plagued by long outages and inflated power bills, the government is setting up office of electricity consumers advocate at Defence Colony in Delhi to represent the consumers in DERC during tariff determination and in various courts protecting the interest of consumers. Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Management Centre of Delhi Transco had launched Delhi Energy Efficiency Programme in association with TERI to study the consumption pattern.

    Green Olympiad, India's first environment examination for school children, will be held on 29 September 2007 in both English and Hindi medium. Launched on Earth Day, 22 April, in 1999, by TERI, this annual initiative focuses attention on environmental concerns like natural resources, pollution and sustainable development, and creates awareness amongst schoolchildren.

    TERI and ITC Foods Sunfeast recently organized a training workshop for school teachers in Delhi, as part of their Sunfeast Hara Banao campaign. 50 teachers attended the workshop from 23 schools in Delhi.

    The per capita energy consumption for Bhutan was 0.63 tonne of oil equivalent (TOE) while the per capita electricity consumption was 1,174 kWh per year, according to the Bhutan energy data directory 2005. The energy data directory, compiled by the department of energy with support from TERI, a non-profit Indian research institute, provides comprehensive information on energy supply, consumption, and energy balance of Bhutan, complete with analysis.
