    17 May 2008

Sh. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, at a prize distribution ceremony today at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) felicitated Cricketers from the corporate world and Corporate Cricket Teams for their outstanding performances. Mr. S K Bansal (Former International Umpire) and Ms. Anjum Chopra (Indian women Cricket team Member), along with Dr RK Pachauri also graced the occasion.

The occasion was also to remember Late Sh. Madhavrao Scindia, his love for sports and cricket in particular. TERI a couple of years back launched “The Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Cricket Tournament”, an annual event at TERI’s cricket field, The RETREAT, Gual Pahari, district Gurgaon.

Dr. R K Pachauri, Director-General TERI, speaking on the occasion, said, “Late Shri Madhavrao Scindia was not only a great leader of the country but also an enthusiastic sportsman. He played the game actively and with great dedication, and this is the best way we can think of commemorating him and his spirit.” Dr Pachauri also lauded the fact that from a mere 4 teams to start with the corporate cricket count has become almost more than 400 teams as of today in Delhi and its adjoining areas.

Congratulating the cricketers and also the teams who were present, Sh Jyotiraditya Scindia said that has always tried to keep up to the dreams of his father regarding sports, especially cricket, and wanted to keep cricket out of the realm of politics. Sh Scindia also gave a special award to Dr RK Pachauri on his completion of 350 wickets in Corporate cricket. In his last match, Dr Pachauri claimed his 365th wicket in Corporate cricket.

The tournaments, played between corporate teams at the TERI Retreat, are regular and annual events. TERI plans to make the corporate cricket tournaments a national event, with plans to spread out to Bangalore and other cities in the coming years.

TERI currently hosts five corporate cricket tournaments annually: Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Cricket Tournament, the Dattu Phadkar Cup, the TERI Cup, The Summer Cup and the newly format of aggressive cricket, TERI 20:20 Cup. All matches are played at “Patchy Greens I & II”, the TERI-developed cricket grounds in the rocky region of Gual Pahari, Gurgaon; named after Dr R K Pachauri’s nick name “Patchy”.
