    24 November 2006

Hero Honda Motors Ltd, the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, and TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), in association with MoEF (Ministry of Environment and Forests), today announced the winners of the eighth GREEN Olympiad and TerraQuiz 2006, the international inter-school environment quiz competition.

The winning teams were felicitated by the Chief Guest, Mr B J Panda, MP, Rajya Sabha, in a ceremony, which took place at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Mr Prodipto Ghosh, Secretary, MoEF; Mr Abbas Ali Baig, Ex-cricketer; Cyrrus Sahukar, MTV VJ, Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Honda Motors Ltd, and Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI, attended the ceremony.

With a participation, this year, of 32 schools' including 28 national and four international entries - TERRAQUIZ is India's first and, so far, the only national-level environment examination conducted in schools nationwide and in some Indian schools in the Middle East and in South-east Asia. The winning team of TerraQuiz 2006 was also crowned the 'Hero Honda Green Ambassadors' for a year. The title, won by Prashant Upadhyay and Piyush Patnaik from Mother's International school, New Delhi, confers upon its holders the responsibility to undertake initiatives to broaden and deepen awareness regarding environmental issues amongst fellow students.

In a closely contested quiz, the first, second, and third runners-up were Brightlands School, Dehradun (Antriksh Bhratwal and Akshay Sharma), Delhi Public School, Duliajan, Assam (Kunal Bora and Krishnabh Medhi) and Anandalaya, Anand, Gujarat (Aonkun Ghosh and Indu R), respectively. The GREEN Olympiad 2006 - which culminates in TerraQuiz - had over 60 000 schoolchildren, from over 1500 schools across India and abroad, participating this year.

This year, TerraQuiz provided a combination of fun, entertainment, and interactive programmes for the school children. Keeping with the tradition of having a popular television personality as anchor of the show, this year the anchor for TerraQuiz was Cyrrus Sahukar, a well-known MTV VJ. In keeping with the spirit of taking a step closer to nature, TerraQuiz 2006 moved outdoors. This year, the rounds were shot in the lawns of TERI's sustainable-building RETREAT Complex in Gurgaon, and the finals at Safdarjung's Tomb. Besides the regular pattern of TerraQuiz, this year saw the introduction of new elements like snippets of information on the participants, a jingle, and a new montage. For the semi-finals and finals, celebrities on video quizzed the participants, for one of the rounds called Terrastar.

Congratulating the winners, Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Honda Motors Ltd, said 'Hero Honda has always been committed to environmental conservation and the TerraQuiz is just one of the various initiatives that we undertake in this regard. Our association with TERI goes a long way and we are sure this event will help the participants, and the winners' the Hero Honda Green Ambassadors - spread awareness about environmental conservation in their respective areas.'

Speaking on the occasion, Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI, said, 'The environmental burden on planet earth has been increasing progressively over the years. Action to arrest and reverse this trend requires the involvement of the youth worldwide, so that their future can be safeguarded. TerraQuiz has created an excellent platform for young minds to understand environmental issues and test their knowledge on problems and solutions related to the environment. Through this programme the message of sustainable development is spreading rapidly to give us hope for the future.'
