  • TERI announces GREEN Olympiad and TerraQuiz 2005 winners: Orissa DAV students chosen Hero Honda Environment Ambassadors from 60,000 participants

    The winners of the Seventh GREEN Olympiad and TerraQuiz 2005, international inter-school environment quiz competition organised by TERI in association with Hero Honda Motors Ltd and the Ministry of Environment & Forests, were today felicitated at a special ceremony at the National Bal Bhavan, Kotla Road. TerraQuiz has the distinction of being the first environmental quiz in India and features in the Limca Book of Records for the same.

    This year the top honour of being crowned Hero Honda Environment Ambassadors was won by Aditya Acharya and Soumy Ashant Nayak from DAV Chandrasekharpur, Orissa. These Ambassadors will undertake initiatives to broaden and deepen awareness on the environmental issues amongst fellow students.

    The second and third place in the international quiz was won by Centre Point School, Nagpurand and Aditya IIT Talent School, Kakinada, respectively. The GREEN Olympiad 2005 - which culminates in TerraQuiz - was held in 402 cities and towns all across India and abroad. Over 60,000 schoolchildren from over 1000 schools participated in the exam.

    Speaking on the occasion, Dr R K Pachauri, Director-General, TERI, said, "We firmly believe that informed decision-making at every level is necessary to achieve the goal of sustainable development. TerraQuiz is an ideal platform for young minds to acquire and test their knowledge on environmental issues. The increasing interest and participation in the programme is not just gratifying for us as organisers of the event, but it also gives us hope that the youth of today will try to make a better tomorrow".

    Applauding the winners of the quiz as well as the participants, Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director, Hero Honda Motors Ltd said, "We at Hero Honda believe in protecting the environment, and we are involved in a number of sustainable initiatives towards this direction, which includes the Green Olympiad and TerraQuiz. Corporates should take the lead in setting examples and support the efforts of the Government and NGOs in this area so that we create a 'Better Tomorrow' for our future generations".

    The Hero Honda Ambassadors receive Rs 25000/ each as cash prize and the school receives Rs 30,000/. This year the quiz was anchored by well-known TV personality Roshan Abbas.

    TERI has been organizing the GREEN Olympiad examination across the country and abroad in association with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Hero Honda and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan since 1999. The Olympiad is an environmental exam for middle and senior level school students (class 8 - 10) to simultaneously test their knowledge on environmental issues and educate them in the process. The top performing schools in GREEN Olympiad are chosen to take part in TerraQuiz, the only environmental quiz on national television. The winners go on to become the Hero Honda Environment Ambassadors.
