  • AFD, IDDRI and TERI launch the book 'Cities: Steering towards Sustainability', A Planet for Life Series 2010 at the 10th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit

    6 February 2010

Cities: Steering towards Sustainability was formally launched at the tenth Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS 2010) organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

Cities: Steering towards Sustainability is a part of a series of annual publications on sustainable development (A Planet for Life) prepared under the scientific leadership of leading figures in the field of sustainable development: Pierre Jacquet, Executive Director (Strategy) and Chief Economist of AFD (French Development Agency), Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Director General of TERI, and Laurence Tubiana, Director of the Paris-based IDDRI (Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations).

A Planet for Life series started in 2007. In each edition, a special theme is discussed and analysed by leading international experts and scholars: Energy and Climate Change in 2007, Biodiversity in 2008, Governance in 2009, Sustainable Cities in 2010.

Talking about the importance of this book, Pr Pierre Jacquet said, "The twenty-first century is already an urban one. Cities are pivotal to sustainability concerns - globalization, climate change, food security, environmental protection, and innovation. Today's urban actors, both citizens and their leaders, have a major responsibility as trustees of the future: their present actions will influence the shape and structure of cities, so that the generations to come may live healthy and contented lives."

Dr Rajendra K Pachauri said, "Cities are central to the processes of growth, innovation and sustainable development. They are also laboratories for observing political and economic dynamics at work and for testing technical solutions and new public policies. It is therefore the type of urbanization rather than the city per se that which will prove decisive for sustainable development."

Dr Laurence Tubiana, said, "This volume takes the reader straight to the heart of how cities work, and identifies contemporary trends, mechanisms and tools that can influence current strategies and choices. The authors' show that city in all their diversity and complexity, offer solutions as well as challenges. The reader will be inspired by vital analyses of the next decade's windows of opportunity for sustainable urban growth."

Cities: Steering towards Sustainability gives a wealth of ideas for specialists and non-specialists alike (policy-makers, administrators, concerned citizens, development professionals, entrepreneurs, journalists, students and others). In addition to papers, A Planet for Life publishes mew perspectives from 80 cities across five continents, multiples maps, charts, timelines and thematic focus essays for an easy reading and understanding.
