Project Profile

Project Title High throughout metagenomic approach for probiotic lactic acid bacteria from camel milk
Project Code 2014MB04
Project Status Ongoing
Start Date September 2014
Sponsor(s) Department of Biotechnology
Division Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology

Lactic acid bacteria are widely distributed in different raw materials viz. milk, meat, flour, soil, water plants, silage, waste products and also in the intestinal tract of animals and humans. Camel milk is different from other ruminant milk in nutritional as well as therapeutic value and also is a rich source of proteins with potential antimicrobial and protective activities. In the proposed work, lactic acid bacteria will be isolated and characterized using molecular tools and will be monitored for their prospective probiotics properties. This study is an attempt to apply metagenomic strategies for the identification of novel LABs with possible industrial applications from camel milk.
