Orientation programme on Climate Change with Government of Gujarat

Background

In the backdrop of climate change and environment protection, the Government of Gujarat, in association with TERI, organised a two-day orientation programme on climate change for ministers, senior government officials, and policy-planners of the state of Gujarat. The programme was inaugurated by Mr Narendra Modi, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Gujarat, on 19 September 2008 and the key note address was delivered by Dr R K Pachauri, Chairman, IPCC, and Director-General, TERI.

The objective of the programme is to develop climate change perspective in the higher echelons of decision-making in Gujarat and also to derive a framework of action to be incorporated in all policy decisions.

While delivering his inaugural address, Mr Modi recounted a number of steps taken by his government to protect the environment, ranging from large-scale introduction of CNG in vehicles in order to reduce emission levels in the transport sector to massive development of solar and wind power in the state. Enunciating about the negative impact of climate change, Dr R K Pachauri said that climate change not only poses challenges but also provides opportunities to become green and promote cleaner growth engines. The Government of Gujarat and TERI also signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) to work jointly to tackle climate change.
