The share of renewable energy in electricity generation is projected to go up by 2030.

A transition to a low-carbon pathway for economic growth is inevitable if the world intends to keep the rise in global temperatures to below two degree Celsius while providing various populations a good standard of living. For countries in the global South, such as India, it is important to find ways to marry economic growth with low-carbon growth. Needless to say, for this renewable energy and energy efficiency in industries and transport will play a crucial role.

At an exchange visit at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) in USA, TERI's Dr Shashank Vyas and Alekhya Datta made the following presentation showcasing TERI's projections of the growing share of renewable energy in India's energy mix, price trends of solar energy, why electrification of public transport makes economic sense, and possible pathways to low-carbon growth in energy-intensive industries, for eg. - exploring the viability of electric heating vs fossil fuel based heating in selected energy intensive processes.

The visit took place under the US-India collAborative for smart diStribution System wIth Storage (UI-ASSIST) project. The UI-ASSIST is a consortium under the Joint Clean Energy Research & Development Centre (JCERDC) of the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF). The consortium is to undertake collaborative research on various smart grid technologies and energy storage for power distribution systems. The project's overall objective is to evolve the future distribution grid that will allow the continuing increase of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) penetration towards a carbon-free electricity system.
