The Workshop on Future Libraries: Advanced GSDL
and RFID is being organized by TERI with support from Department
of Information technology (Ministry of Communications
and Information Technology, Govt. of India), Indian
Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO)
About the workshop
There has been growing interest in the area
of digitization, development of digital libraries, and library
automation in the country. The fundamental reason for developing
digital libraries is the conviction that they will provide
better delivery of information than was possible in the past.
Since libraries of today contain huge quantity of data, development
of digital libraries and subsequent customization would be
very helpful for end users. Among the number of open source
softwares available for building digital libraries, GSDL has
gained considerable acceptance among the Indian user community
because of its simplicity, user-friendliness, and easy customization
facilities.
With DLs (digital libraries), development libraries
also need a system for speeding up checkouts, keeping collections
in better order, and to provide better control against theft,
non returns, and misfiling of a library's assets. RFID is
a new technology, which offers libraries advanced intelligence
and a new approach to circulation, tracking, inventorying,
and security of library materials.
The workshop on 'future libraries: advanced
