GIS Day provides an international forum for users of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. This year, GIS Day was celebrated across the globe on November 20, 2013. In this regard, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and TERI University (TU) jointly organized the GIS Day 2013 on November 20, 2013 at TERI University, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi (India).

The GIS Day 2013 event was inaugurated by Dr Leena Srivastava, Vice-Chancellor, TERI University and Dr P K Joshi, Professor and Head (Department of Natural Resources), TERI University, delivered an expert talk on 'Innovative Uses of GIS'. Various students, researchers from TERI, TERI University, Delhi Technological University, and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University participated in this event.

Mr Rakesh Raina, Senior Vice President, NIIT GIS Limited (ESRI India) was the chief guest for this event. His inspirational talk on 'GIS Technology Trends' was highly appreciated by the participants. Ms Seema Kundu, Research Associate, TERI has presented 'GIS related activities within TERI and TERI University'.

The technical sessions concluded with an interactive demonstration given by Mr Alekhya Datta, Research Associate, TERI, on the forthcoming 'Rooftop Solar Web-GIS Tool for India' - a first-of-kind initiative taken by TERI and supported by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF), for estimating the Rooftop Solar Power potential for Indian Solar Cities (www.regisindia.com). The Web-GIS Tool has received overwhelming responses from the participants, and Mr Raina from ESRI India has extended his support and collaborative research opportunities between ESRI and TERI for carrying-out such GIS initiatives in-near future.

Dr Rajiv Seth, Registrar, TERI University delivered the welcome note for the valedictory session on the successful completion of the event, and presented a solar lantern to Mr Raina as a token of appreciation. The event concluded with the cutting of a cake, specially designed for GIS Day, followed by high tea, and networking.
