Energy sustainability can be interpreted as efficient production,
distribution, and use of energy resources and provision of equitable
and affordable access to energy while ensuring security of supply
and environmental sustainability.
The Energy Sustainability Gauge
is a web-based interactive tool that seeks to answer the following
questions:
What are the relevant
indicators of sustainable energy development for a country?
The gauge enables the user to choose an indicator of energy sustainability.
How is society progressing towards sustainability in a specific
area as defined by an indicator?
The gauge shows the trend
and rate of progress with respect to the indicator.
Is
the national government implementing a mix of policy instruments
to address the issue?
The gauge indicates the
level of implementation of economic (e.g. taxes), regulatory (e.g.
laws), expenditure (e.g. allocations for R&D) and institutional
(e.g. committees) policies.
