Energy sustainability can be interpreted as efficient production, distribution, and use of energy resources and provision of equitable and affordable access to energy while ensuring security of supply and environmental sustainability.

The Energy Sustainability Gauge is a web-based interactive tool that seeks to answer the following questions:


What are the relevant indicators of sustainable energy development for a country?
The gauge enables the user to choose an indicator of energy sustainability.

How is society progressing towards sustainability in a specific area as defined by an indicator?
The gauge shows the trend and rate of progress with respect to the indicator.

Is the national government implementing a mix of policy instruments to address the issue?
The gauge indicates the level of implementation of economic (e.g. taxes), regulatory (e.g. laws), expenditure (e.g. allocations for R&D) and institutional (e.g. committees) policies.
