Introduction The TERI Corporate Awards recognize leadership in corporate environmental management, social responsibility and HIV/AIDS initiatives. Recognizing the increasing complexities facing the environment and its impacts on the sustainability of businesses, many corporate organizations have taken bold and visible steps to integrate sustainability components in their overall corporate strategy. Through them TERI acknowledges innovative practices in Indian industry and accords recognition to model corporate citizens. These awards have the distinction of being the first of their kind where companies are evaluated for their leadership efforts in environmental management CSR and HIV/AIDS programmes. The awards are conferred annually to corporates from a wide section of the industry. TERI instituted the TERI Corporate Awards for Environmental Excellence in 2001 and TERI Corporate Awards for Corporate Social Responsibility in 2002. In 2007 TERI introduced the Corporate Awards to Business Response to HIV/AIDS in collaboration with GTZ. Since inception we have received more than 600 applications for the awards. 8th TERI Corporate Awards: recognizing CSR, HIV/AIDS initiative and environmental best practices in India Inc Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, on 05th June 2009 in New Delhi felicitated 10 Indian corporate entities for Environmental Excellence, Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Response to HIV/AIDS at the 8th TERI Corporate Awards Ceremony chosen from amongst 98 applications received this year. Also present as special guests at the ceremony in the Plenary hall of Vigyan Bhavan were Shri. Jairam Ramesh, Hon'ble Minister of State for Environment and Forest and Mr Sajjan Jindal, President ASSOCHAM and Vice CMD, JSW Steel Limited. The selection of winners is carried out by a distinguished panel of jury chaired by Justice J S Verma, former Chief Justice of India, who along with other jury members were present on the occasion. Dr Pachauri presented first copies of two publications namely, “Environment Best Practices: Industry Initiatives - Cleaner is Cheaper Volume 6” and “Corporate Social Responsibility: Replicable models on sustainable development - Citizens at Work Volume 4" released at the high profile award function to the President. While addressing the august gathering, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh
Patil, emphasized that with the recent global crisis there is a compelling
need for corporate institutes to adhere to high standards of business
practices and adopt business strategies that adhere to principles of corporate
responsibility towards their stakeholders and society. Shri. Jairam Ramesh,
complimented TERI for this initiative that has generated a lot of interest
among in the corporate India. .
