Dr Prodipto Ghosh
Dr Ghosh, a multidisciplinary professional specializing at the interface of science, economics, and public policy, was a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from 1969 until 2007, when he retired as Secretary, Environment and Forest, Government of India. He was appointed Distinguished Fellow at TERI in 2007 and is actively involved in climate change and sustainable development policy.
He currently serves as Member of the Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change; Member of the National Expert Committee on Climate Change, and Scientific Consultant in the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India. He is a member of the Eminent Persons Group on G-20 matters set up to advise the Ministry of Finance. He was a Member of the Independent South Asia Commission on Poverty Alleviation (ISACPA). He is also Chair of the Task Force on Climate Change of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Dr Ghosh has served as Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Govt. of India; Economic Advisor and Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, and Senior Environment Specialist, Asian Development Bank, Manila. Other concurrent positions held by him include: Co-Executive Secretary of the Indo-US Economic Dialogue; and Member Secretary of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and Trade & Industry Advisory Council.
Dr Ghosh has also held Consultancy positions with World Bank, UNDP, FAO, and IAEA; and Visiting Faculty Positions in several national and international institutions, including International Academy of the Environment, Geneva; East-West Centre, Hawaii; International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Laxenburg; Jawaharlal Nehru University; Management Development Institute, Gurgaon; Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, etc.
He has c.40 peer reviewed publications in the area of energy, environment, and development, and several books in these fields. He is also a Member of the American Economic Association, and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India/UK).Among the awards and honours conferred on Dr Ghosh include the BP Pal Centenary Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Environment and Resource Conservation (2006), Alumni Achievement Award of the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, for Outstanding Contribution to National Development (2007), and Alumni Achievement Award of the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA, for Contributions to International Environment Policy.
Dr Ghosh has a Ph.D in Economics and Policy Analysis from the Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA and a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi.
